Explore the magic of Knysna's coastal bush in secure seclusion.

Buffalo Valley is a large private reserve bordering the serene Goukamma River just two kilometres upstream from the warm Indian Ocean beaches of Buffels Bay. Across the river, rolling fynbos-covered hills lead to milkwood forests and pristine sea shores managed by the Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve.

Each self-contained bush lodge is unique, designed around its particular setting. The Forest Lodge nestles in a milkwood thicket at the edge of the river, the River Lodge has a spectacular view of the Goukamma River, and the Vlei Lodge overlooks a tranquil bird vlei. The lodges are completely private - out of sight and sound of each other - and have sundecks and braais.

With solar powered lights and gas appliances (geysers, fridges, stoves with ovens), the lodges are both comfortable and environmentally friendly.

Vlei Lodge

Overlooking a tranquil birdvlei, this magical hideaway has extensive sun decks designed around noble milkwood trees.The living area with its huge fireplace has a character all its own.

Linger around the fire at the spacious outdoor braai area. Fall asleep to a chorus of frogs and wake to bird song.

Sleeps five. The loft above the living area has three single beds. A separate cabin houses the main bedroom with king-size extra-length bed and en suite shower and flush toilet. Fully equipped kitchenette. Gas fridge, gas stove and oven. Solar powered lights. Linen, bath towels and firewood provided.

Forest Lodge

Hidden in riverine forest right on the edge of the Goukamma River, the spacious skylit Forest Lodge perfectly complements its stunning surroundings.

Relax on the magnificent deck built around bird-filled milkwood trees as the river glides by. Follow a short boardwalk to a private jetty from which you can fish, canoe and swim.

Sleeps four: one bedroom has a queen-size bed, the other two single beds. Flush toilet and separate shower. Solar powered lights. Portable braai. Linen, bath towels and firewood provided.

River Lodge

The sunny River Lodge has a panoramic view of the peaceful Goukamma River and pristine Goukamma Nature Reserve.

The deck and outdoor braai area offer ringside seats to spectacular sunsets over fynbos hills. It's just a short walk through coastal forest to the grassy banks of the river where the canoes are stored.

Sleeps six: one bedroom with a queen-size bed and single loft bed; the other with two single beds and one loft bed. Flush toilet and separate shower. Solar powered lights. Activities

Canoeing

Indian canoes (two person) with paddles and life jackets are supplied free of charge for guests staying at the Vlei, Forest and River Lodges.

Braais, picnics, swimming and fishing on the river bank Buffalo Valley Bush Lodges guests have access to a private recreation area on the grassy river bank. Two braai areas, picnic tables, firewood and canoes are provided.

Walks, nature trails and hikes
There are two walking trails on Buffalo Valley's 150 hectare reserve. Buffalo Valley pays for its guests to enjoy hikes on the neighbouring 2500 ha Goukamma Nature and Marine Reserve free of charge.

Beaches and whale watching
Buffels Bay with an informal restaurant and shop is just 3 km away. During spring and summer Southern right whales are often visible off Buffels Bay beach.

Knysna
The scenic town of Knysna with restaurants, shopping centres, art galleries and craft outlets is just 17km away. Top attractions include ferry trips on the Knysna lagoon, steam train rides, and walks and cycles in the indigenous forests. Sample oysters farmed in the Knysna lagoon (also sold in a take-home box) and locally brewed beer.
